"Spanish Steps"
1994 | Watercolor on Paper | 14 x 11 inches
A delicate on-site watercolor sketch from Piazza di Spagna, capturing the sweeping elegance of the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti as it rises toward the twin-towered church of Trinità dei Monti. At the heart of the composition stands the ancient Sallustian Obelisk, flanked by the rhythmic curves of the Baroque balustrades and the warm Roman light washing over terracotta roofs and stone façades. Painted during a period of intense European travel in the mid-1990s, this piece reflects my early fascination with the interplay of architecture, history, and human movement within urban landscapes — themes that would later deepen in my oil paintings exploring sense of place and cultural memory.
